At UYE, we believe real change begins with real relationships. Our mission is to connect at-risk teens in Phoenix to the hope found in faith. We work closely with schools, ministries, churches, and local organizations to meet the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of inner-city youth.

One of the biggest needs we’ve seen on high school campuses? Faithful, trusted women who can walk with young girls through the challenges of life.

For a long time, our team—made up mostly of men—has poured into students across the city. We’ve built lasting bonds, offered mentorship, and shared the love of Jesus. But we kept running into a gap. The girls we serve often need someone who understands their experience—someone who can speak into their lives in a way we simply can’t. That’s why we’re so excited to introduce Chrystal, a new member of our team who has already begun making an incredible impact.

Why Chrystal?

Chrystal is a Phoenix native who grew up in ministry. Her father was a pastor, and her life was shaped by the local church. She’s no stranger to the realities our students face. She knows the heat, the pressure, and the struggles that come with living in the inner city. But most importantly, she knows Jesus—and she shares His love in a real and relatable way.

Chrystal’s story is powerful. She grew up surrounded by faith but struggled with doubt. As a teen, she wondered if God was even real. One day during a youth group rehearsal, she had a moment that changed everything. In the middle of questioning God’s existence in her heart, a young girl—who didn’t know what Chrystal was thinking—came up to her and said, “God says I’m real.” That simple, Spirit-led moment was the beginning of Chrystal’s deep walk with the Lord.

Over the years, Chrystal has served in a variety of ministries, worked with students and families in tough situations, and walked closely with those who were far from faith. Her approach is rooted in love, patience, and understanding. She knows how to meet young people where they are—and gently point them toward God’s truth.

Why This Matters?

Many of the girls we meet on our campuses are carrying heavy burdens. They struggle with identity, family dynamics, peer pressure, trauma, and more. And often, they feel like they have to earn love—at home, at school, and even from God. That’s where Chrystal steps in. She brings a calming presence and a bold faith. She listens, encourages, and shares her own story—one of grace, not perfection. She helps our students see that they are already deeply loved by God, no matter what.

One of Chrystal’s favorite stories is about a young woman who once told everyone she was an atheist. But after months of watching Chrystal live out her faith—through struggles and all—that same young woman came back and said, “Because of you, I believe in God.” That’s the kind of transformation we pray for every day.

What’s Next?

Chrystal recently joined us for two weeks at our summer program, serving alongside our team and getting to know our students. And it didn’t take long—students connected with her quickly. Her warmth, her presence, and her willingness to jump right into the messy parts of life made a big impact. As she put it, “These are my babies now.” She’s all in—and we’re all better because of it.

Our work isn’t easy. The needs are many. But thanks to people like Chrystal, we’re able to meet those needs with compassion, wisdom, and the hope of the Gospel. And that’s what Arizona Urban Youth Excel is all about—showing up, building trust, and helping young people see that they are seen, known, and loved by God.

Stay tuned—because this is just the beginning of the story.
