At Urban Youth Excel (UYE), we are often asked about our “why.” For many, the answer seems straightforward: we help at-risk youth graduate and avoid becoming societal statistics. Our mission is far greater: it is to ensure every young person graduates equipped with the faith, relationships, and direction necessary to walk boldly into their purpose and live a life of intention.
The truth is, many youth in our inner-city communities face a crisis of direction. Surrounded by instability and pressure, they desperately lack the spiritual and relational guidance needed to envision a future beyond their current challenges. They need more than just academic help; they need role models and lifelines.
The Journey to Purpose: Mentors as Navigators
This is where the heart of UYE lies: in the power of a committed mentor. We don’t just staff our program with teachers; we place dedicated leaders into the lives of our youth. Our mentors are constant, trustworthy navigators, guiding students through the essential questions: Who am I? What am I called to do? And what difference will I make?
Our work is fundamentally relational. Through one-on-one time, group activities, and spiritual discussions, our mentors help develop the whole person—their spirit, their heart, and their character.
