There are moments in our ministry that perfectly capture the heart of our mission, moments of deep connection that set the stage for lasting spiritual growth. These gatherings, dedicated to fellowship, the Word, and discipleship, are where young lives are truly transformed.

At Urban Youth Excel, our mission is to win, build, and equip. Our recent intensive sessions are a beautiful example of the “build” phase taking root, moving students from participants to spiritual leaders ready to walk boldly into their calling.

Affirming the God in Them

A powerful highlight of these discipleship gatherings is the moment our Teacher Mentors look into the eyes of their students—the young men and women they have intentionally chosen as disciples—and share profound affirmations. Staff don’t just speak generally; they testify to the unique spark of God’s presence and potential they see in each student. This is a deliberate act of choosing, confirming the student’s value and their leadership trajectory.

Following this moment of personal investment, we break down the true expectations of discipleship. This is not about being perfect; it’s about being committed to growth, accountability, and the challenging path of following Christ.

A Chapter on Seeking and Finding

To anchor this new relationship, we turn to the Scriptures, reading Luke 15, the chapter often known for the parables of the lost—the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son.

Why Luke 15? Because discipleship is fundamentally about being sought, being found, and learning to celebrate the return. It sets the standard for how we should live and how we should treat others, reminding us that every life holds infinite value to the Father. It lays the spiritual roadmap for their journey together.

We conclude these sessions by giving space for the students to express their own hearts. Hearing students share their deep admiration for their Teacher Mentors is a beautiful confirmation of the trust and love that has been built over time.

A Symbol of Commitment

To symbolize this new bond and the commitment to follow Jesus and their mentors, each student receives a WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) bracelet. This simple band represents more than a relationship; it is a daily, tangible reminder of the expectations we discussed and the higher calling they are answering.

These times are beautiful, signifying a new level of commitment in our ministry—a vital step in raising up the next generation of spiritual leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Thank you, Dawit Kebede, and all our staff, for consistently leading these students forward!
