For a young person growing up in the heart of Phoenix, “quiet” is a rare commodity. Between the hum of traffic, the constant buzz of a smartphone, and the internal pressure of what we call “the hustle”—that relentless drive to survive and provide—it can feel impossible to hear anything else.

At Urban Youth Excel, we often talk about meeting kids where they are. Usually, that’s in the middle of the noise. But lately, we’ve been reflecting on one of the most powerful gifts a mentor can offer: the gift of stillness.

The Pressure of “Always On”

Many of the students we serve carry adult-sized burdens. They are navigating poverty, single-parent households, and the constant lure of “short-term survival” paths. When you are in survival mode, your brain is wired to look for the next threat or the next opportunity. There is no room to breathe, let alone to wonder what God might be calling you to do.

Creating a Sanctuary in the Small Moments

Mentorship isn’t just about giving advice; it’s about creating a safe emotional and spiritual space where the “hustle” can pause. Discipleship certainly happens in our big off-campus events, but it is deeply enhanced in these kinds of small, quiet moments. We saw it beautifully today with Dawit and a few of our students. There wasn’t a stage or a microphone—just coloring, chatting, and laughing. It’s in those simple stretches of time that walls come down.

When the noise of the world fades, that’s when the “Sweet Call” becomes audible. In the stillness of a shared activity, a student can finally ask the big questions: Who am I? Why am I here? Does God actually see me?

Moving From Survival to Significance

Our goal isn’t just to help these students survive the streets—it’s to move them from a mindset of survival to a life of significance.

Jesus often withdrew from the crowds to find a quiet place. He knew that to lead and to endure, you must first be grounded. By modeling this stillness, our mentors are showing our youth that their value isn’t tied to their “grind,” but to their identity as children of God.

Loved to see that truth in action today!
