There is a common misconception about the city. From the outside looking in, people often see the struggle first. They see the 53% graduation rates, the poverty levels, and the “survival mode” that defines so many of our neighborhoods in Phoenix. But if you walk the streets with us, if you sit in our mentorship circles, you start to see something else entirely.

You see joy.

Not the cheap, fleeting happiness that comes from a good day or a new pair of shoes—but a deep, defiant joy that flourishes exactly where it shouldn’t.

Joy as an Act of Resistance

In the “city hustle,” joy isn’t just a feeling; it’s a strategy. For our students, choosing to laugh, to create, and to worship in the face of systemic pressure is a radical act. It’s a way of saying that the circumstances of our zip code do not have the final say over our souls.

When we look at the life of Jesus, we see a Savior who moved toward the pain of the city, yet maintained a connection to the Father that produced “fullness of joy.” At UYE, we believe that bringing Christ into the urban center isn’t just about fixing problems—it’s about uncovering the beauty that is already there.

Beyond the Survival Mode

For many of our youth, life is a series of “hustles.” You hustle for grades, you hustle for safety, you hustle for a future. But constant survival leaves very little room for the heart to breathe.

Our 24/7 mentorship model is designed to create “pockets of peace.” When a student knows they are seen and supported, the grip of survival mode begins to loosen. In that space, joy starts to grow. We see it in the high schooler who finally stops looking over his shoulder and starts looking toward his calling. We see it in the young leader who realizes that their story isn’t a “before” picture, but a masterpiece in progress.

Finding the “Light in the Gray”

Urban youth ministry isn’t just about pointing out what’s wrong; it’s about celebrating what’s right. It’s finding the “Light of the World” reflected in a concrete playground or a crowded classroom.

Joy in the city is found in:

  • Connection: The moment a mentor and student realize they share the same sense of humor.

  • Consistency: The peace that comes from knowing someone will show up, every single Tuesday, no matter what.

  • Calling: The spark in a student’s eyes when they realize their potential is greater than their environment.

A Call to Common Joy

We don’t just bring joy to the city; the city teaches us about joy. As we walk alongside these incredible young people, we are reminded that the Kingdom of God is often most visible in the places the world overlooks.

Will you help us cultivate this oasis? Whether through prayer, partnership, or presence, you are part of the joy rising in the heart of Phoenix.
