Finding Radical Faith Beyond the Concrete

If you look at the historic, asphalt-locked neighborhoods of Phoenix, it’s easy to focus solely on the daily hustle and survival mode that our youth endure. But at Arizona Urban Youth Excel (UYE), we know that the relentless energy these teenagers use just to survive isn’t a liability—it is an untapped capacity for powerful spiritual leadership. Throughout the school year, our ministry works tirelessly to build consistent relationships and show up on high school campuses.

From June 6–10th, that relentless pursuit culminated in a breathtaking shift. We had the profound privilege of taking more than 50 inner-city high school students out of the intense valley heat and up into the mountains for Young Life Summer Camp in Williams, Arizona.

For a few days, the chaotic noise of the city was replaced by a different kind of oasis—a space intentionally designed to break down walls, heal hearts, and build a spiritual infrastructure that environmental pressures cannot crack.

Breaking Barriers and Shared Tables

Transformation rarely happens in a vacuum; it begins when guard rails come down. Throughout the week, our youth and mentors jumped headfirst into wild camp games and high-energy competitions. While it might look like pure chaos from the outside, watching leaders laugh, compete, and act foolish alongside these students serves a deep spiritual purpose. It completely shatters the barriers of mistrust.

With those walls down, relationships naturally deepened over the simplest moments: sharing meals around a table. Over plates of food, away from the survival mode of back-home realities, students found a safe space to slow down, connect, and process what God was stirring in their hearts.

The Sacred Space of One-on-Ones

But the true heartbeat of UYE is moving past the surface. Every single leader spent dedicated one-on-one time with each student nestled in the mountain air. In these quiet, sacred moments, our youth felt safe enough to share the heavy burdens they normally carry alone—struggles at home, deep personal hardships, and honest questions about faith.

Instead of offering quick, temporary band-aids, our mentors met them with raw, intentional presence. We offered practical care, lent a listening ear, and pointed them directly to the unwavering anchor of Jesus Christ.

Cabin Time: Where Faith Becomes Personal

Every evening, after hearing a powerful message about grace, the students gathered back in their cabins. Cabin time is where the gospel stopped being a general lesson plan and became intensely personal. In the safety of their peers and leaders, these teenagers wrestled out loud with their doubts, asked hard questions, and shared with transparent honesty.

In those late-night cabin spaces, we watched full-circle, miraculous moments unfold. God answered your prayers in abundance: more than 50 students stepped forward to say a radical “yes” to Jesus Christ, choosing Him for the very first time or standing up in powerful rededication. As Luke 15:10 reminds us, “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” To witness over fifty of our city’s youth claim their identity as spiritual change-makers is a joy that words can barely contain.

The Journey of Going Deeper

This life-altering week would have been completely impossible without your radical generosity. Because of your financial backing, prayers, and encouragement, UYE was able to provide crucial scholarships for students and leaders who otherwise could never have stepped onto that campground. You directly helped close the loop for these kids.

For many ministries, a summer camp trip marks the grand finale of a season. But for UYE, camp is just the starting line.

As we transition back to the valley, our mission is to go even deeper. Throughout the rest of the summer, our team will be on the ground, actively discipling, walking alongside, and mentoring these exact same students to ensure their new faith takes deep root in the city streets.
